Sandra Cook called Lynn Holmes and reported what had happened in her office. Lynn listened silently and became more concerned than ever that something was amiss in the Briand household. June was languishing physically and mentally, and was not responding to therapy and not making appointments. It appeared that she was trying to hide something, but what? She didn’t appear to be battered though she showed all the classic signs of an abused woman.
The following day Lynn called June and asked her and Jimmy to come down to Nashua Memorial Hospital and meet “the treatment team” to see if they could help determine how best to help her. She was no longer going to play games. She intentionally called in the evening, knowing Jimmy would be there and able to set a time for the meeting. She told June point blank that the meeting was required in order to retain her Worker’s Compensation benefits. In fact, there was no such requirement.
Lynn had concocted the story in order to get Jimmy to come to the hospital so her colleagues could assess him and ask him questions. The treatment team she referred to included four doctors, a lawyer, Sandra Cook, a note taker, and herself. This was not revealed during the phone conversation either. The team was interested in “sorting out whatever underlying issues were present,” chief amongst them psychological issues.
On December 10, Jimmy strode into the meeting with June behind him. He was so huge that when he entered the room, June was not visible and Lynn thought he had come alone. Then June peeked out from behind him and gave a little wave.
The team was assembled around a conference table, and Lynn told the couple to sit beside her in the two remaining empty chairs. Jimmy pulled out his chair and sat down. He was on his best behavior and had even replaced his jean jacket with an old tan corduroy sport coat that was two sizes too small for him.
June had been seeing these people for months and knew them all; they were not going to pull any punches. Lynn started by saying, “There is more going on with June than her injury from work.” She did not look at Jimmy, but she did pause to let the statement sink in. Jimmy showed no reaction.
“We’re here to help,” she continued. “We think its best if we set up a treatment plan.” She went on to describe the various components of the plan, all of which Jimmy supported. “He came across as overly supportive,” she said later. “And backed the program one hundred percent.” Lynn felt he was disingenuous at best, and suspected he was downright lying. Her hunch proved correct when she got to the pain management part of the plan.
“I sat there not saying anything while Jimmy was nodding his head and agreeing to everything. They were talking about continuing my physical therapy and biofeedback, and he nodded in agreement. Then they said they wanted me to try some other forms of pain management, including psychiatry.
